And One Giant Huge Needle Later...

So anyone that studies my blog and reads it with all the attention it so rightly deserves (ahem) knows that, one week ago yesterday, I got my belly button pierced.

I feel rather retarded admitting that. Not because it got infected or I don't like it, but because I feel like a 16-year-old teeny bopper at the edge of parental rebellion whenever I utter the phrase "I pierced my naval." People who are turning 25 in less two weeks do not pierce their belly button flesh. That action is reserved for teenagers who wear glittery eyeshadow and listen to Hilary Duff.

But what I want to clear up is that I have always wanted my belly button pierced, ever since Mandy Winkler pierced hers in the eighth grade with a safety pin and showed us all her newly blinged-out naval in the locker room. I even went to go get it pierced when I was 18, only to be denied due to my outie belly button (hello, visiting outie fetish Googlers!).

So when Sis won a free piercing at the concert last week - which I didn't let her use, much to her chagrin - I thought it was going to go to waste. I, after all, was cursed with an outie belly button that couldn't be pierced and Sis was much too young. And I was already pierced out - seven in my ears and my tongue (which I took out a couple years ago because it was annoying, and for which my mother disowned me, so disgusted with it was she, and for which she'll probably disown me again for even mentioning it). So there wasn't much left to pierce, minus genitals or nipples (neither of which I have any interest in piercing) or my nose (which I would love to do, as I love the little tiny diamond studs, but my work won't let me). So I asked the guy at the counter if he was sure outie belly buttons couldn't be pierced. Kind of half joking. But not. He said that actually, sometimes they can be, depending on how they are formed. And mine? Mine was one of the ones that could be pierced.

Sweet Jesus. A lifelong dream was about to come true.

I decided to just go for it (after much hemming and hawing and nearly chickening out), since it was a) free, and b) free. After a little pinch and virtually no pain, my belly button was permanently adorned with a sparkly crystal barbell. And while I do love it, I am still embarrassed that I was nearly 25 when i got it done.

as long as you take it out before you have kids and turn 40...i don't think it's such a bad thing

There is nothing wrong with it!

I had mine peirced 12 years ago and let it close because I thought it was childish. Then I got it re-peirced and ripped it out by accident. Then I got it pierced AGAIN 2 years ago.

I am 34 this week and I will wear it in my belly until I am old and fat and you can't see my belly button anymore.

It is better to regret things you have done, then to regret things you haven't done ;).

If you have the belly to pull it off, it is deffinately sexy, no matter what age... but there is nothing worse than a fat belly with a ring through the first roll!

I am sure yours looks great!

That's OK. I'm 25 and I can't figure out whether I should get a tattoo or not. I want one, but on the other hand, I'm freakin' 25. That only leaves me about 10 years to enjoy it before I'm too old to ever show it in public.

i think that is wicked cool! good for you! i want to do mine now too. ;)

So jeez, where's the pic? :)

It has been awhile since I have been posting, but I am in the process of coming back to it. You had left comments on my site in the past and I yours, however it appears by the volume of comments on your site now you are very popular. Please if you have a moment I need some advise....

I used to be a piercer for Spellbound Tattoo, Portage la Prairie, MB, Canada. And I think your never too old to get piercings. I once did a 40+ women who thought they looked cool but wasn't sure if she should get one. Take it from me, your only as old as you feel. :)

From this post, I’ve learned that parents who wanted their kids not to have pierced belly buttons should insist that the doctor tie off the cord in a way that the knot is an outie—but one that is a special kind of outie… And that some anonymous woman in the Midwest will owe some anonymous girl in the Midwest a piercing in a few years, when she is of legal age… Great story!

see, you think it' childish to do in your mid to late 20's because it is a rebellious act of a teenager. IF YOU LIVE IN THE MIDWEST! out here in true cali land it's everywhere. girls get punctured from 18 to nearly 40.

so it's all good, but you have to post a pic. it a rule.

It doesn't matter how old you are when you got it done, but the fact that you got it done is more impresive. I always wanted a tatoo but fear(ed) it would date me, and I don't want to regret a tasmanian devil.

I think on the right girl (young with a nice flat/toned stomach), they are sexy! On a date once we went to a shop because I wanted to get a tattoo, well I couldn't decide on what I wanted so I didn't get one at the time. Although my date got her belly button pierced in front of me. Looked painful and I could tell it hurt by the sweat on her face and the fact that she nearly broke the bones in my hand when they stuck it in - lol.

Anyway, I did get my tat about a month later. So far I don't regret it, but time will tell. Probably when I'm old it will feel "lame".

Frau Lobster didn't get a tattoo until she was 34, and I'll be 36 in less than a month and am still unadorned.

And I have always wanted a tattoo, I just can figure out what to get.

A Lobster? Maybe, my buckaroo lobster, I've thought about it.

Got my ear pierced when I turned 18 because Mom couldn't stop me, and after a few days of jacking with the alcohol pads, I remembered that I HATE wearing jewelry. So I gook it out and it healed up.

But you still haven't shown us PHOTOGRAPHS of your new piercing. I'd give you a pass if it was your nipples or clit, but for serious, you can show us your belly button. It can't be uglier than the gremlin bruise...

i got mine pierced when i was 26, got to keep it in through my pregnancy at 27 (doc said it was okay as long as my belly button didn't pop out, which it didn't).

i'm 34 now and i still have it pierced and i love it.

I am sure it looks great, but I think we need photographic proof :-)

Twelve years ago I had my nose pierced on a whim. I loved it, but my very stupid job (server at Ruby Tuesdays) wouldn't let me keep it in. I was forever taking it out, putting back in. It started to look questionable, so I took it out completely.

If I were a little younger, I'd go for the eyebrow piercing. Love that look.

Tattoos are a little different - completely permanent, you know? So I understand the hesitation in that area. I have two tattoos, on on my lower back and one on my neck, and since I can't see them I don't get sick of them. It works out nicely. I would never get a cartoon character or team name or anything like that, though.

DiamondKT, your girlfriend was a pussy. It didn't hurt hardly at all!

Justice, they don't pierce THROUGH the outie part, but through the little hood over it. YOu need that little bit of skin to pierce. Some outies don't have it, and some outies stick out so much that it would rub against the piercing, making it hard to heal and constantly causing it to unscrew. Or so they told me. But mine's just a tiny little nubbin, barely out at all.

Jen, it's August 31, when's yours?

Locus, I'll post pics of mine if you post pics of yours! :)

Dear Lord, are you nuts! The prospect of pain, oh me, oh! Why not just put a knitting needle through there, use the belly button lint to knit a sweater!

You are young! I got my nipples pierced when I was 37.

Well, I wouldn't say much about the piercing thing per se, since I abut I'm a bit concerned about that free piercing thing. I mean, that is the weirdest coupon I've ever heard of! Am I just out of it?

Oh fuck. Stupid mousepad and erasing things I say. Basically I'm trying to say that since I got my nose pierced only three years ago, I can sympathize with your "always wanting a [insert piercing fetish here]." But...[start back up with the part of my comment that makes sense here]

I did mine when I was 16 or 17..I passed out dead away & the nice lady had to revive me and all...but it was worth it.

It looked great for the first month of two before I finally just got irritated by it.

At least at 25, you can say you made an informed decision when you got it?

I didn't get my ears pierced until I was 20 years old. WHy? because I was afraid it was gonna hurt! Yeah. I already had 3 tattoo's a tounge piercing and a belly button too, but I was too afraid to get my ears pierced. My sister took me and MADE me do it. It was kinda silly.
